Beachy Beatniks

The past few days I've had the opportunity to catch up with some really great friends allowing for good conversation, a little sun and a good degree of prose. This evening a group of friends gathered to celebrate a friend, her life and the fact that she hit the '40' zone. There is no greater way to express love and appreciation than through poetry.

A Beatnik Poetry Potluck was born for such a celebration that could not hold merit without a beret, bongos and some serious finger snapping. We too often hold back in expressing how we care for others, whether that is out of fear or embarassment, and too often words are held back and depth is never revealed. Rarely is this the case among our English literary folk and it was great to mingle and uplift someone who embodies the qualities that most of us strive for all of our lives.

Life is fleeting and to have opportunities to just chill, reflect and jam to some seriously good poetry can't leave you not feeling pretty good. It's after midnight and my fingers are still clicking and the feet still tapping.

With poetry in the air and sand still on the soles of my feet I have savored each moment of summer and the people that enrich my life. There's just something about having melted wax on my seat covers, sand wedged along the stick shift and the smell of salt water that seems to permeate the carpets. This is my indicator that summer is very present and my state of zen has hit the 10 mark and I'm diggin' it.

A Key to livin'

I'm sitting on the back porch of our rental house in Key West listening to chirping birds, the putter of mopeds and the palm leaves lightly tapping against the roof. A few close friends and I flew into Miami, loaded into a fairly stellar white mini van and made our way down the Keys arriving at the southernmost point of the States. I was a little nervous about fitting another road trip in the mix with wedding fest 2010 quickly approaching, but it has been nothing but chill and goodness.

There has been nothing more on the agenda than finding the perfect Cuban iced coffee, listening to an acoustic band at local pubs and debating whether or not paddle boarding or jet skiing can fit in between a nap and a few chapters of a book. It has also been nice catching up with the girls, having some great laughs and enjoying one another's company. We spent a good hour jet skiing along the coastline. I am always in awe of God's creation with the bleached white sand beaches, crystal blue and green water and blackened rocks that protrude from the earth along the water's edge. Walking along the shore line with toes slapping against the water and a light breeze; this is my purest form of therapy and stillness.

Tonight we head out on a small boat that will take us to an island for dinner. I'm not really sure of the details, but chilling on an island watching the sunset is going to be my top ranked natural high of the day. It's all about the goodness.

oHIo

It already feels as though summer is flying by, but at the same time it's a little early to have that vibe. Last weekend Keith & I ventured to Ohio to visit his best friend, Mike, and his family. We spent twelve hours in the car continuing the wedding planning, listening to tunes and just diggin' time together.

Forcing myself to get away, hit the pause button and relax was just what I needed. It was great taking the boat out on the lake, soaking in a little sun and I even attempted to fish for about 2.69 minutes. The fish having a longer attention span than I, prevailed and remained in the lake while I frolicked in the boat.

My goal over the next few weeks is to just enjoy the moment. There is nothing within me of a Bridezilla nature, but attempting to pull everything together has been interesting and a challenge to my non-detailed oriented nature. I say it's character building while incresing the mass of my already fluffy hair : ) We are at the three week mark come Sunday...yay!

Farmville bound in 30 days & counting...

Yesterday marked the thirty day countdown for the wedding. Keith & I headed down last week to acquire our marriage license. You might be interested to know that you can't marry a sibling, but you can marry your first cousin. Just putting that out there.

It was not only time to get things rolling with wedding fest 2010, but having some pretty special time with the family. Tristan starts school in the fall & it will limit how often we all see one another, but we'll adjust and get creative. I was proud to be with them during their first ever pool hop experience. Hot days + bathing suit+ no pool at the house = find the nearest hotel with a pool. Yay! The kids had a blast & it was a welcome relief from the heat. Tristan & Gabe are my VIP pool hopping crew : )

I always look forward to summer's arrival and the time to breathe a little deeper, soak in a little sun, catch a few waves and fit a wedding somewhere in there. It's going to be a hectic one, but high in quality and substance. I couldn't really ask for more than that. Yay, Farmville!
